Byron Rec Comic Con is February 4, 2017

February 4, 2017 will mark the second annual Byron Rec Comic Con! While we are a small show, we have a lot to offer, so enjoy the free admission and come check us out.

What should you expect from our event? Mostly, just expect to have fun! But here are some specifics beyond that:

2015-04-04 07.46.03Venue & Directions

The Byron Rec Comic Con (put on by the Byron Township Parks & Rec Dept.) is held at the Byron Township Community Center inside Whistlestop Park. Located on the south side of 76th Street, somewhat near the intersection of Byron Center Avenue in Byron Center, MI. A southern suburb of Grand Rapids, we are conveniently accessed from M6 (head south on Byron Center Avenue) and US131 (head west on 76th Street). Most of the event will be held in the gymnasium, with additional activities in our multi-purpose rooms. We will have handouts with information available.

We will have over 30 vendors selling their own artwork, books, crafts, toys, collectibles, and memorabilia all relating to the world of comic books, pop culture, sci-fi, fantasy, and geek culture. We will also have a concession stand available with snacks, drinks, and Byron Rec Comic Con shirts, buttons, and stickers to purchase as souvenirs.

Cosplay, or costume play, is encouraged for all ages! It is certainly not required, nor should you feel left out if you don’t choose to dress up, but we do welcome it! We will again have a few Cosplay Contests starting at 2pm during the Comic Con. We know people love to dress up as their favorite characters, show off their sewing skills, and be proud of what they have created, so treat everyone with respect. Most people who do dress up are happy to be photographed, but be sure to ask permission before you go snapping away.

In addition to the vendors, we will have some areas of activities! We have geared them towards kids, but we welcome everyone to enjoy what we have set up. In one area we will have Legos for some free play, another area we will have coloring and activity pages that you can take home or utilize here, plus some video games to play. We are also setting up a backdrop for you to take photos in front of, and are working on some additional interactive activities, as well!

Raffle and Prizes

We are collecting some neat prizes to be raffled off at the Comic Con. It is free to enter and we will have slips of paper to fill out your name and email address (or phone number if you prefer that method of contact). You do not need to be present, we will choose our winners at the end of the day and email or call to notify winners by the following Monday. If entered in the Cosplay Contest, there is an additional chance to win a prize.

Appropriate Cosplay: This event is family friendly. Please keep that in mind when planning your outfit for the day. Also, if your costume includes a weapon, it must be obviously fake. We reserve the right to ask you to leave or bring your accessories back to your car.

Parking: We have a large parking lot in front of our building that attendees are welcome to park in, and it is free. If it happens to fill up, there is additional parking behind the Community Center in Whistlestop Park. Please use caution in parking near grassy areas that may be muddy and difficult to get out of it we have wet weather. We do not have anyone on site to tow vehicles out of muddy areas.

Money: Some vendors may accept credit cards, but it is a good idea to bring cash with you. The concession stand is also cash only. Our front desk will not have the ability to make change, so please plan ahead. The activities we have planned, including the raffle, are free.
